The actress referred to how comedy has changed in the decades after the famous sitcom was broadcast.

Jennifer Aniston recently spoke about how comedy changed in the decades after the airing of friends. While promoting his next movie Murder Mystery 2Aniston explained that comedy is more complicated today than it used to be.

“Now it’s a bit complicated because you have to be very careful, which makes it very difficult for comedians, because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, we make fun of life,” he told AFP. In the past, he continued, “you could joke about a fan and laugh, that was hysterical. And it was about educating people about how ridiculous people were. And now we are not allowed to do that.”

The actress then shifted her focus to friends specifically, noting that when the show was airing in the 1990s, it was funny and people missed some of the potentially more controversial takes the sitcom had.

“There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who now go back to episodes of Friends and find them offensive”, said. “There were things that were never intentional and others… well, we should have thought about it, but I don’t think there is a sensitivity like there is now.”

Aniston also told the news outlet that it was a tragedy that the sensitivity surrounding comedy could be the reason why there have been fewer comedies in recent years than before.

“Everyone needs something fun,” the Rachel Green actress said. “The world needs humor! We can’t take ourselves too seriously, especially in the United States. Everyone is too divided.”.

In recent years, Friends has received some criticism for starring six white actors and minimalist actors of color, with most of the latter only appearing as guests, such as Gabrielle Union, Mark Consuelos, Craig Robinson and Lauren Tomas well as Aisha Tylerwho had a recurring role in the later seasons.
