The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2023 inductees and there is controversy

Artists like Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Soundgarden and The White Stripes were left out of the selection.

The 2023 edition of the ceremony of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame already has its new entrants. Willy Nelson, Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, George Michael and The Spinners they were the chosen ones.

There are six more members beyond that list, with the distinction of being selected by a select Hall of Fame committee to join the seven artists who were chosen via general vote. These are the singer Chaka Khaninstrumentalist and producer Al Kooper and the lyricist Bernie Taupin, all in the category of “musical excellence”; the pioneering rock guitarist Link Wray and the creator of hip-hop DJ Kool Herc in the “musical influence” division; and “Soul Train” TV host, Don Corneliusas the winner of the annual Ahmet Ertegun Award.

These 13 honorees will be celebrated at a swearing-in ceremony and concert on November 3 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. A media partner is expected to be named soon, as the room’s contract with HBO has expired.

Of the artists eligible for this year, the names that were left out are striking, since they are artists that are more closely related to what rock itself is. The seven at-large ballot nominees who did not make the cut with the voters in this round are A Tribe Called Quest, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Soundgarden, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon.

Probably only Crow and Rage count as traditional “rockers” on the list. The others are clearly referents of other musical genres, such as country (Nelson), hip-hop (Elliott), pop (Michael), soul (the Spinners) and alternative rock (Bush).
