This was announced to the APA by her adoptive son David Brewer. After Grace Bumbry suffered a stroke in New York last year, she was flown back to Vienna in December. Here the soprano, who had started her career as a mezzo, died in the hospital.
Ultimately, Grace Bumbry is to be buried in her native town of St. Louis, where she was born on January 4, 1937. From there, the singer launched an unprecedented operatic career that began in 1961, when she made her debut as the first dark-skinned singer in Bayreuth and was given the somewhat dubious title of “Black Venus” by the media. As a result, Bumbry sang on the most important stages in the opera world and delighted audiences from the New York Metropolitan Opera to the Salzburg Festival. After retiring from the stage, she passed on her knowledge to numerous students.
