US President Joe Biden has intervened in the Hollywood screenwriters’ strike. He calls for “a fair deal as soon as possible”.
Now the US President is also commenting on the ongoing strike by Hollywood screenwriters: at the presentation of the comedy series “American Born Chinese” in the White House
“I really hope that the strike in Hollywood can be resolved and that the writers get the fair deal they deserve,” he said. It is important that they experience “dignity, respect and appreciation”. The screenwriting industry, Biden continued, is a “significant American industry”: “We need the writers to tell the stories of our nation. The stories about us all.”
Authors can hardly make a living
The writers’ union, the Writers Guild of America, had called a strike for the first time in 15 years. She calls for more salary and greater profit sharing in the age of streaming services. Background: The authors often received a fixed annual salary from the platforms, even if series developed into huge successes with hundreds of millions of viewers. More and more authors would work at the lower salary limit and would find it difficult to make a living.
Because of the strike, in which more than 11,000 unionized writers are taking part, studios and streaming services fear that series and film starts could be postponed. The strike is in its second week, so far no agreement is in sight.
