Robert Geiss reveals: This is how it works behind the scenes of “The Geissens”

For more than 22 years, the Geissens have been giving insights into their luxurious life as millionaires in “The Geissens – A Terribly Glamorous Family”. At the OMR Festival in Hamburg, Robert Geiss gives an insight into the production.

Since the beginning of 2011, “Die Geissens” has been shown on television during prime time almost every Monday. “The Geissens – A Terribly Glamorous Family” now has 21 seasons with more than 290 episodes. Since May 2022, fans can also look forward to the offshoot series about daughters Davina and Shania “Davina & Shania – We Love Monaco”.

At the digital festival “Online Marketing Rockstars” (OMR), the head of the Geiss family now gives exclusive insights behind the scenes of the successful series. Because the multi-millionaire has been producing them entirely himself since 2015 – with his company “GeissTV”. Why? Geiss reveals this to moderator Kai Pflaume on the festival stage in front of a packed hall: We can do it better ourselves.”

60,000 euros per episode

“My job is to bring in money that the family spends again,” says the entrepreneur smugly. So the Geissens produce themselves and sell their show to RTL 2, says Robert. According to “Bild”, they get 60,000 euros per twisted episode. Season 20 alone brings in more than 2.2 million euros with its 38 episodes.

The fact that Geiss produces itself was not always the case. At the beginning of the show, the Cologne production company “Joker Productions” produced the format, Carmen and Robert each received only one fee for their performances. The reason for the documentary about the jet set life of the Geissens was the sale of the Geiss fashion company “Uncle Sam” in 1995.

“Everyone wanted to know what I would do then, what my next steps were. So I let TV accompany me for a home story – and apparently that went quite well,” he says at the festival. Three and a half years after the start of the first season, Robert then wanted shares in the production company and founded “GeissTV GmbH”.

Geiss reveals how the production of the episodes has been going since then. He says: “We sit down and think about what we want to experience in the next two to four weeks.” The two daughters Davina and Shania were not previously involved, but at 18 and 19 they are now old enough to have a say, says Geiss.

When asked how many seasons the Geissens still have to see, the entrepreneur replies: “Open end, as long as people want to see us.”

In any case, the numbers look promising: According to “DWDL”, the 21st season of “Die Geissens – Eine absolutely glamorous family” is one of the programs with the highest ratings on RTL 2. Two new editions of the docu-soap reached this Year at prime time 7.0 and 7.1 percent market share with 880,000 and 970,000 viewers.
