Singer Kim Petras celebrates one success after the other. Now the German can be seen on the cover of the iconic “Swimsuit” issue of “Sports Illustrated” – as the second trans woman ever.
Kim Petras’ triumphal march continues: It started in Cologne, where the singer was born. Last year she wrote music history when she reached number one in the US charts together with pop star Sam Smith and the song “Unholy” – something that only a few German artists have managed to do so far. Petras and Smith also received the Grammy for Best Pop Duo.
And now Kim Petras has made it onto the cover of Sports Illustrated’s famous “Swimsuit” special. This puts the 30-year-old in a row with stars like Beyoncé, Bar Refaeli or Kim Kardashian, who graced the cover page last year. Other cover models this year include actresses Megan Fox and Brooks Nader, and TV presenter Martha Stewart. Even more notable, Petras is only the second trans woman in the role. In 2021, Leyna Bloom was the first trans woman to be selected as a cover star.
For Kim Petras “a dream came true”
Petras shared the cover picture on Instagram, which shows her in a golden bikini. “I was so excited when I got the call,” she told Sports Illustrated. For her, a “big dream has come true”, especially because she has so many famous predecessors. At first she was a bit nervous during the photo shoot, but in the end the singer was very satisfied with the pictures.
Speaking about her transsexuality, Petras told the magazine that while she’s proud to be able to inspire other trans people, she sometimes feels pressured by it: “I think the most important thing is what you do, not what gender you are. It doesn’t matter what gender or what sexuality you have, it’s about what you make of life and what’s in you.”

Petras has already planned the next step on her way to becoming a big star: Her debut album “Feed The Beast” is to be released on June 23rd. In April she released the single collaboration “Alone” with rapper Nicki Minaj.
