The writer Dževad Karahasan is dead. The converter between the worlds died in Graz on Friday, as his publisher Suhrkamp announced. Born in Bosnia, he commuted between his old hometown of Sarajevo and his adopted hometown of Graz. Karahasan was considered one of the most renowned authors in the Balkans – and one of the most honored.
Karahasan’s work includes novels, dramas, essays and theoretical writings. His most important works include “Sara and Serafina” (2000), “The Consolation of the Night Sky. A Novel in Three Parts” (2016) and in 2019 the volume of short stories “A House for the Tired”. Common to all genres was a certain impetus for the Enlightenment, a desire to act as a mediator between East and West or between Islam and Christianity.
