People: Schwarzenegger understands radical climate protests

How should one deal with controversial actions in the name of climate protection? Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger has a clear position.

Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger has shown understanding for radical climate protests. “These are people who mean well,” the 75-year-old told the BBC on Sunday. “They may just not be doing it the way we’d like them to,” said the former California governor. He pointed out that most countries had not yet kept their promises at the UN climate conference in Paris. The goal is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees compared to the end of the 19th century.

“As a result, people around the world are angry at governments who come up with excuse after excuse why they can’t do it,” Schwarzenegger said. “People are angry and wondering what to do. So they go and do everything because they are angry.”

In the UK and elsewhere, climate activists have also used radical forms of protest such as chaining, taping and painting buildings and expensive artworks to demonstrate for more environmental protection. The British government has severely restricted the right to demonstrate to prevent such protests. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had said protesters should be ashamed of their selfish behavior.

Schwarzenegger has also made a name for himself as a climate protector. He called on activists not to block development as a solution to climate change. “We need to get away from stopping every project from building. We need to go out and build, build, build all these green projects,” the action star said.
