Salman Rushdie: Princess Anne presents him with a medal of honour

Salman Rushdie was appointed a member of the Order of the Companions of Honor by Princess Anne in Windsor on Tuesday.

Great honor for Sir Salman Rushdie (75): The Indian-British author was appointed a member of the Order of the Companions of Honor in Windsor on Tuesday. The associated medal of honor was presented to him by Princess Anne (72).

Rushdie said at the ceremony that he was “a great honor” to be recognized for his “lifetime work” and that Princess Anne had been “very generous”.

In addition, the writer, who was stabbed in August 2022, announced that while it “took a while,” he has now started writing again. When his next book is finished, he would “let you know,” he quipped.

Serious injuries from a knife attack

Rushdie was badly marked by the knife attack last year. Since then he has been blind in one eye and can no longer use one hand. The reason for this are three serious injuries to the neck and arm of the author of the novel “The Satanic Verses”, 15 other injuries to his chest and torso.

The attack on Rushdie happened on the open stage at a literary event in Chautauqua, New York. In February 2023, he revealed that he was still struggling with physical and psychological consequences. At that time, writing was still difficult for him.

Rushdie lived in hiding and under police protection for years. In 1989, the Iranian revolutionary leader Ruhollah Khomeini (1902-1989) issued a so-called fatwa in which he demanded Rushdie’s death because of his book “The Satanic Verses” and offered a high reward for killing Rushdie.
