“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’, has passed away peacefully at her home in Küsnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland, at the age of 83 after a long illness,” the Guardian quoted an official statement as saying . It goes on to say: “With her, the world loses a music legend and role model.”
1980s superstar
Turner began her half-century musical career in the late 1950s in her future husband Ike Turner’s (1931-2007) band. This gave her the stage name Tina Turner. Towards the end of the 1960s, the duo became known worldwide with hits such as “River Deep – Mountain High” (1966) and as the opening act for the Rolling Stones.
In interviews over the past few years, Turner has repeatedly described the abuse she faced in her marriage to Ike Turner. “My relationship with Ike was doomed from the day he realized I was going to be his moneymaker,” Turner wrote in her 2018 biopic My Love Story. “He had to control me, economically and psychologically, so that I could never leave him.”
After the separation and divorce from Ike Turner, Tina Turner enjoyed tremendous success as a solo artist in the 1980s. Her 1984 album Private Dancer contained the mega-hit What’s Love Got to Do With It, and won three Grammy Awards in 1985.
More hits like “The Best” or “We Don’t Need Another Hero” followed over the course of the decade.
Turner is said to have sold over 200 million albums in her long career. In 1988 she played in front of 180,000 people at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
After a successful world tour in 2008 and 2009, Turner retired from the music business. In 2013 she married her longtime partner Erwin Bach.
