Music icon Tina Turner has died. Many well-known voices are now mourning publicly – including Angela Bassett. The two had a special bond.
US actress Angela Bassett (64), also known for her screen role as Tina Turner, has recognized the strength and courage of the late singer.
Bassett had turned Turner in the biopic Tina – What’s Love Got To Do With It? and said according to industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter that Turner experienced pain and trauma in her life and had the courage to tell her story, walk her path and show others what a future filled with love, compassion and freedom should be like . It was an honor to know Turner and to play her in the film.
Bassett’s connection to Turner
The role earned Bassett an Oscar nomination in 1994. Laurence Fishburne starred in “Tina – What’s Love Got To Do With It?” husband Ike Turner, from whom the singer separated in 1976 after years of domestic violence.
Bassett was named one of the 100 most influential people of 2023 by Time Magazine in mid-April. On the occasion, Turner described the actress in the US magazine as a “perfect” performer.
When they first met, Bassett did not look, sound, or move like her, which came after hard work, Turner wrote. “But even then I could see that this young woman, standing in front of me, had strength, determination and big, big dreams, just like me.”
According to a spokesman, Turner died on Wednesday in Switzerland at the age of 83 after a long illness.
