Created by Jesse Armstrongthe satirical comedy-drama about the power struggle within the Roy family has been a critical and ratings success since its inception in 2018. It has garnered 13 Emmy Awards since then.

Details and curiosities of Succession

Shakespeare’s influence on Succession

The series is heavily influenced by Shakespeare’s 17th century tragedy King Lear. Brian Cox, whose character in Succession is modeled after the play’s titular monarch, played Lear during the ’80s and ’90s while on tour with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre. Cox reprized the role in a 2004 episode of the sketch comedy series French and Saunders (1987), this time in a satirical trailer for a campy modern adaptation of Lear that sees him ruling a media empire.

The producers behind Succession

Succession’s executive producers include actor Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay. It should be noted that this is not the first time that the duo has teamed up to work behind the scenes, they previously worked on The Big Short, Vice and Anchorman.

Cross auditions in Succession

Jeremy Strong is Kendall Roy, but before that he auditioned to be Roman. The actor was interested in playing Kendall, but he had some reservations about the similarities he found with that character. In the end, he decided to change his mind, did a new casting and got the role of Ken. For his part Kieran Culkin (Roman Roy) was almost the cousin Greg, at least it was the intention of the production, he did not feel that he was suitable for the role, so he opted for Roman and the role of Greg went to Nicholas Braun.

Not based on the Murdoch family

Despite the widespread belief that the series is based on Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul, the show’s creator insists that it is not. Jesse Armstrong, the creator of Succession, said in an interview that “it’s not nonsense to say it’s not really the Murdochs.” Armstrong understands that one of the common associations with the powerful family is the fact that there aren’t that many high-profile tycoons in the UK, which is why people tend to make that association. It should be noted that in the series, Logan Roy is Scottish. The latter at the suggestion of Brian Cox, born in Scotland.

age differences

Alan Ruck (b. 1956) is closer in age to the actor playing his father, Brian Cox (b. 1946), than to the actress playing his sister, Sarah Snook (b. 1987). He is also older than the actress who plays his stepmother, Hiam Abbass (b. 1960).
