Cabernet Sauvignon, the fourth most important grape variety in the country, celebrates its day

He Cabernet Sauvignonwith some 14,000 hectares planted in Argentina, will celebrate its day globally next Thursday, considered the queen of red varieties and with which internationally recognized wines are made.

Originally from Bordeaux (France), the result of a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, in Argentina it is present in most wine-producing provinces.

With a total of 13,801 cultivated hectares in 2021, which represents 6.5% of the country’s total vines, it is the fourth variety with the largest area after Malbec, Cherry and Bonarda, according to the latest information from the National Institute of Viticulture ( INV).

Mendoza has the largest amount of Cabernet Sauvignon in the country, reaching 10,494 ha (76%) in 2021, followed by San Juan with 1,349 ha (9.8%) and the rest of the provinces with 1,958 ha (14.2%). .

Although it develops best in temperate and dry climates, such as California (USA), Argentina, Chile, Spain, Portugal, Italy, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, it is planted in almost all wine-growing regions of the world.

“The Cabernet Sauvignon in Mendoza captures the very essence of the Argentine terroir; our semi-arid climate and altitude provide the grapes with perfect sun exposure and a thermal amplitude that contributes to a gradual and balanced ripening”, highlights Soledad Buenanueva, winemaker at Bodega Dante Robino.

According to the specialist, “its ability to express the character of the Argentine terroir, together with its versatility to achieve wine styles, make it a true jewel of Argentine viticulture.”

“The Cabernet Sauvignon is known throughout the world for being one of the wines with the best aging potential due to its structure; this area is beautiful for this since it achieves a great concentration of tannins, which leads to patience in the bottle to that the consumer really enjoys it as it should be”, adds Leandro Azin, winemaker at A Corazón Abierto, a Los Chacayes project, in Mendoza.

However, the number of hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon throughout the country has decreased by 15.7% in the period 2010-2021, a drop attributed to the increase in the area occupied by Malbec, the emblematic Argentine variety for the international market.

With small clusters, like its grains, it has berries with a thick skin rich in tannins; and is characterized by the aroma of red fruits and peppers, more or less intense, depending on the areas and cultivation system used.

Thus, it gives rise to full-bodied and fruity, intense and tannic wines, suitable for aging, exalting its intense aroma, flavor and complexity during aging; and it is also usually part of blend wines with Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc.

Cabernet Sauvignon Day is celebrated on the Thursday before Labor Day in the United States (which this year falls on Monday, September 4).
