“Barbie” is currently the most successful film of the year – ahead of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Oppenheimer”. This is reported by several US media, citing the industry portal “Box Office Mojo”.
The lighthearted, critical comedy about the pink toy doll and her boyfriend Ken’s trip to real-life California had previously had other successes: it had the best start of the year in North American cinemas. In Germany, too, “Barbie” jumped to number one in the cinema charts, before “The Equalizer 3” took over the post six weeks later. In Austria there was the “Golden Ticket” for the film. Director Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”) also managed the best start of a film directed by a woman ever.
According to Forbes, the numbers could have been even better if the film hadn’t been banned in several countries. The responsible authorities in Kuwait had declared that “Barbie” spread “ideas and beliefs that are alien to society and public order in Kuwait”. Almost a month after its release, Algeria also stopped further broadcasts of the film.
