Despite allegations of creating a “toxic work environment,” singer Lizzo was awarded the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award.
As the magazine reports, American singer Lizzo (35) will receive the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at this year’s Black Music Action Coalition gala on September 21st. The honor comes against the backdrop of a court lawsuit filed by three of her former background dancers at the beginning of August. The allegations made therein include, among other things, “sexual, religious and racist harassment”, and the artist was generally accused of having created an “extremely toxic and hostile working atmosphere” in her dealings with her employees.
Lizzo denies allegations
The allegations made are in sharp contrast to the artist’s previous image, who always presents herself in her songs and in public as a fighter for body positivity, social justice and sexual self-determination. She reacted to the lawsuit with demonstrative disappointment and rejected the accusations.
When awarding this year’s “Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award”, the jury of the “Black Music Action Coalition” was apparently unimpressed by the ongoing legal proceedings. In addition to Lizzo, Sylvia Rhone (71) was also nominated for the award, who was the first black woman to be appointed CEO of a major record label (Epic Records) in 2019.
Commitment against racism in the music industry
An official announcement about the award said: “The Black Music Action Coalition is proud to honor Lizzo and Sylvia Rhone at this year’s gala as they are among a group of trailblazers who have made an immense impact in the music industry and beyond “We applaud their commitment to pushing boundaries, amplifying Black voices and breaking glass ceilings to create space for Black women.”
It is an association that aims to combat systemic racism in the music industry. According to their own statements, their award honors “musicians, music managers and music companies who have made the most significant contribution to social justice, change and/or fairness in the past year”.
