Pirelli is giving a foretaste of the 2024 calendar with the first photos. In addition to catwalk queen Naomi Campbell, a real king is also there.
The motto “Timeless” is the 50th edition of the well-known Pirelli calendar. For this, artist Prince Gyasi (28) from Ghana photographed famous personalities such as Naomi Campbell (53) and Idris Elba (51). The Italian tire manufacturer shows how complex the shoots were in the first making-of images.
“A journey into color”
The stars can be seen in large settings. Model Naomi Campell, for example, poses in front of a huge clock, actor Elba in the middle of suitcases. “Pirelli has always paid great attention to the language of photography and its evolution,” says a press release. “In the photographs of the young artist Prince Gyasi we see a new language that conveys positive energy and powerful messages and also appeals to new generations. His work reveals an original aesthetic, it is a journey into color, into a world with unique characteristics. “
Artist wants to show people who inspired him
The artist himself emphasizes: “I am honored that Pirelli has given me the opportunity to express thoughts, feelings and emotions on their canvas for the 50th calendar. As the first African and Black artist behind the Pirelli Cal for 2024, I have the chance “To highlight some of the people who have inspired me over the years as a child and as an adult.” Representation and culture are very important to him. “Therefore, for the first time in the history of the calendar, I have decided that part of the project will take place in my country Ghana.”
His Majesty King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II (73) also finds a place in the calendar. The year 2024 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Ashanti Kingdom under his rule. The artist wants to reflect this with his spectacular recording. It shows the king in ceremonial robes under a canopy and among his followers.
Gyasi also photographed the Nigerian singer and actress Tiwa Savage (43), the author Margot Lee Shetterly (54), the poet Amanda Gorman (25), the actress Angela Bassett (65), the author and music producer Jeymes Samuel (44), the Ghanaian Artist Amoako Boafo (39), US singer and actress Teyana Taylor (32) and former professional soccer player Marcel Desailly (55).
The Pirelli calendar has been published since 1964 and is considered a collector’s item. All editions are strictly limited and are only presented to selected business partners and important personalities. The 50th edition marks the 60th anniversary.
