Host Jimmy Fallon responds to employee complaints about a “toxic working environment” with an emotional apology.
The news came as a surprise: Of all people, the presenter Jimmy Fallon (48), known as “Everybody’s Darling”, is said to have created a “toxic working environment” with unpredictable behavior behind the scenes of his “Tonight Show”. Instead of denying the allegations, the 48-year-old apologized to those affected in an internal video call.
Dark mood behind the scenes
Previously compiled by sixteen former and current employees of the show, who reported a gloomy and “pretty sullen atmosphere” in the studio. Many members of his team say they have to go about their work in constant fear of Fallon’s “outbursts” and his “contradictory behavior.” The atmosphere had been so toxic in the past that some of them feared for their mental health. Empty cloakrooms were regularly used as “cry rooms”.
“It’s embarrassing and I feel so bad”
, the moderator took the allegations to heart and apologized for his offenses in a video call yesterday (September 7th). Participants on that call quoted Fallon as saying: “It’s embarrassing and I feel so bad. I’m sorry if I embarrassed you and your family and friends… I feel so bad that I told you can’t even say.”
In the short speech, Fallon vowed to do better and emphasized: “I want this show to be fun, it should be inclusive of everyone, it should be funny, it should be the best show, the best people.”
Jimmy Fallon has hosted NBC’s “Tonight Show” since 2014 and has made a name for himself during this time with his friendly and unconventional manner. Most recently he moderated the Rolling Stones’ press conference for their new album “Hackney Diamonds” in London.
