Electronics: A lack of semiconductors plays into the cards of chip manufacturer TSMC

The Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC is optimistic about the future. The group expects to be able to grow strongly in 2021.

The Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC is profiting from the global semiconductor shortage. Sales and profit increased significantly in the second quarter compared to the same period of the previous year.

The group is optimistic about the further course of the year and expects to be able to increase sales significantly in 2021, as TSMC announced on Thursday. The high demand from car manufacturers, PC suppliers and many other industries for chips is playing into TSMC’s cards.

The surplus rose in the second quarter by around eleven percent to 134 billion Taiwan dollars (around 4.1 billion euros). With this, however, the company performed somewhat weaker than expected by experts. Sales rose by around a fifth to 372 billion Taiwanese dollars.

TSMC is the world’s largest contract manufacturer of chips and wafers, the base plates for electronic semiconductors. The iPhone manufacturer Apple is one of the major customers. But TSMC also supplies chips for televisions and vehicles. The company could also benefit from the fact that, according to insiders, Apple plans to produce up to 90 million iPhones this year, significantly more than before.

Due to the sometimes desperate search of large corporations for semiconductor components, TSMC has moved to the center of a distribution battle. Chips are especially in short supply from automakers and in the entertainment equipment industry. This has put supply chains at risk and the production of products like game consoles stalling. TSMC expects the situation to continue into the coming year.
