The Danish queen had actually wanted to travel north by ship. But nothing comes of it, she had to fly. The royal ship “Dannebrog” has engine problems.
After problems with her royal ship, Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II (81) arrived by plane on a visit to the Faroe Islands for several days.
The monarch landed on the islands in the North Atlantic on Thursday after her trip had to be postponed on Wednesday due to bad weather conditions. This was confirmed by the royal family of the German Press Agency after the Danish news agency Ritzau had initially reported about it.
Due to the delay, some dates in the Queen’s plan have been postponed: According to the royal family, a reception in the Faroese capital Tórshavn with Prime Minister Bárdur á Steig Nielsen should take place around noon. During her five-day visit, Margrethe will visit numerous places including Fuglafjørdur and Vestmanna. She also wanted to see a tunnel with an undersea roundabout that was inaugurated at the end of 2020.
The Faroe Islands are largely autonomous, but officially belong to the Kingdom of Denmark. The same applies to Greenland, which Margrethe also plans to visit from July 24th to August 5th. The Queen actually wanted to undertake both trips with the royal ship “Dannebrog”, which had suffered engine problems at the weekend. According to Ritzau, the ship is now anchored in the northern Danish port of Frederikshavn and should therefore arrive in the Faroe Islands on Sunday at the earliest when the problems have been resolved.
