The founding member of the band returns more than a decade after his departure.
Dream Theater announced the return of the founding member Mike Portnoymore than a decade after he left the formation.
The news of their return to the progressive band was shared by the band today (October 25) with a surprise update on X (ex Twitter). “We are delighted to announce the return of drummer @MikePortnoy to Dream Theater”He said.
In the post, the band also confirmed that the new lineup is now ready to begin work on a new studio album, which will be their first with the drummer since 2009’s “Black Clouds & Silver Linings.”
Portnoy’s return also marks the restoration of the classic 1999/2000 line-up, which also included the singer James LaBriethe guitarist John Petruccithe bassist John Myung and the keyboard player Jordan Rudess.
During that time, the quintet recorded six albums, including fan favorite “Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory,” “Images And Words” and “Train Of Thought’.” Portnoy later split from the progressive metal heavyweights in 2011 and joined other projects including The Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo and Adrenaline Mob.
