She is a real popular figure in the scandal-ridden Spanish royal family: Princess Leonor comes of age and can be celebrated.
Spanish Crown Princess Leonor took the constitutional oath on her 18th birthday. She took the oath on Tuesday in a white trouser suit in the lower house of parliament in Madrid: “I swear to carry out my office conscientiously, to uphold the constitution and the laws, to respect the rights of citizens and the autonomous communities and to remain loyal to the king .” Afterwards there was applause for several minutes. Should she at some point succeed her father King Felipe VI. (55), Leonor would become Spain’s first female head of state since 1868.
In the afternoon, the older of the two daughters of Felipe and Queen Letizia (51) was to receive the collar of the Order of Charles III, Spain’s highest civilian award, in the Royal Palace. According to the media, Leonor’s controversial grandfather, the former king Juan Carlos (85), who has been in exile in Abu Dhabi since August 2020, was only invited to the private birthday party in the Pardo Palace in Madrid in the evening.
According to some media reports, there was a “Leonor mania” in Madrid on Tuesday: thousands lined the streets as the royal family drove from the Royal Palace to the “Congreso de los Diputados”. People cheered and waved Spanish flags. There were flags and large pictures of Leonor everywhere in the capital. Two large screens were set up in the main square, Puerta del Sol, in front of which thousands also gathered to watch the swearing-in ceremony.
However, not all Spaniards love their royals. On the contrary: There has been a lot of criticism for years. The swearing-in ceremony was boycotted on Tuesday by five of the 11 parties represented in the lower house who are calling for the abolition of the monarchy. In addition, two female ministers and one minister from the left-wing government coalition stayed away from the ceremony.
It was above all former king Juan Carlos who damaged the image of the “Casa Real” with numerous escapades and affairs. The Crown Princess, an often dreamy-looking young woman who began three years of military training in the summer after graduating from high school, is now supposed to help her father Felipe make the royal family more popular again and, if possible, unassailable.
