It is known that Things at Marvel haven’t been good for a few years now. Since the launch of Avengers: Endgame onwards, The company cannot find a fixed direction and begins to have to deal with poor results at the box office, poor reception of its films and an overwhelming entry into the world of streaming but with little substance. Now it seems that The heads at the production company seek to resolve the conflict before it is too late.
At the company’s annual retreat in Palm Springs this time there was no relaxation and celebration but rather discussion about what the future of Marvel will be. CEO Kevin Feige and other creatives at the studio had to sit down to analyze what to do with these conflicts but mainly with an immediate one: the legal scandal for allegations of violence against Jonathan Majors, the actor designated to play Marvel’s next big villain and who has already appeared in several franchise products.
What Marvel will do with Jonathan Majors
The star, who appeared in both seasons of Loki (the second is currently airing) and the film Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, faces accusations of violence and sexual abuse by several women, including criminal complaints. Majors will have to appear in court which could define what Marvel’s action will be with him.
According to Variety’s reporting on the September meeting, One possibility is to no longer count on the actor and change the main villain of the next Avengers movie to Dr. Doom, the classic antagonist of the Fantastic Four. This could be more useful to Marvel than simply replacing the actor with another for the same character, because the poor reception of the Ant-Man movie could be remedied with a strong change of direction.
Marvel could revive Iron Man and Black Widow
Given the disappointing reception of the company’s latest films and series, different solutions were put on the table to change Marvel’s direction. One of the most surprising is the possibility of reviving Iron Man (Rober Downey Jr.) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), characters who died in Avengers: Endgame.
“There have been talks to bring back the original Avengers from the first film”sources assured Variety who detailed: “This would include reviving Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, but at the moment they have not committed to this idea.”
While a film of that style could be appealing to many fans, one wonders if it wouldn’t be too soon. Reviving characters is classic in comics, but only 4 years have passed since Avengers: Endgame.
Marvel seeks to save the movies and series to be released
In the same sense, the company seeks to save what it can from the films that are already in production. This includes The Marvels, sequel to Captain Marvel, which will be released this November 10. The film went through four weeks of reshoots to accommodate the story and there were problems with its director, Nia DaCostawill begin working on another film during post-production. The film cost US$250 million and is expected to open with US$75 million in its first weekend.far below, for example, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) which earned $185 million.
Moving forward, Kevin Feige seeks to stop and reshuffle the projects with problems. The Blade movie almost lost its star, Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, due to problems with the script. Now, the film has been delayed until 2025 and has gone through at least five scriptwriters and two directors.
This adds to the news that the series for Disney+ will now have to return to a more television production format, with a showrunner to oversee the entire production. Such is the case of Daredevil: Born Again that after months of filming it will start production again to generate a better product.
