The Oscar winner uses her celebrity to help people in need – no matter where. In front of the European Parliament she spoke of now more than 114 million refugees.
In a speech to the European Parliament, actress Cate Blanchett warned against forgetting those suffering around the world outside of Israel and Gaza.
“While these events understandably dominate the news, this is far from the only violence plaguing our world, and it is not the only innocent lives being lost,” said the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Goodwill Ambassador Australian on Wednesday in front of MPs in Brussels.
The wars in Ukraine and Sudan continue, and there are reports of violence in Ethiopia, Afghanistan and the Sahel region, said Blanchett. “In any case, innocent people suffer and innocent people have to run for their lives,” emphasized the Oscar winner (“Blue Jasmine”).
As a goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR, the 54-year-old said she was able to speak to refugees in various countries, such as Jordan and Niger. Blanchett urged refugees to be treated with compassion and support, such as those fleeing war in Ukraine. Solidarity should not be limited to one group. “No one benefits from a generation of alienated and marginalized young people. No one,” she said.
According to the latest UNHCR information, the global number of refugees has recently risen to a new high of more than 114 million. This does not include the people displaced by the war between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas.
