Will Zac Efron take on the role of Matthew Perry? That was one of the great wishes of the late “Friends” star.
Zac Efron (36) and Matthew Perry (1969-2023)’s time together on the set of the comedy “17 Again – Back to High School” apparently left a lasting impression in both directions. About a week ago it was reported that Perry was planning a biopic about his life and was keen to cast his former co-star as a young version of himself. When asked about this at the US premiere of his new film “The Iron Claw” on Wednesday (November 8th), Efron was deeply moved by the news.
“I felt very honored” on the red carpet at the event in Dallas, Texas. “It would be great to do that,” he also expressed his willingness to fulfill Perry’s wish should the project one day become a reality. He added: “We’ll see what happens.”
Speaking about the sudden death of Perry, who he co-starred with in 2009’s 17 Again, Efron said: “I am still devastated that he is no longer with us. “
An eventful life as a template for a biopic
There would probably be enough material for a powerful biopic about Matthew Perry. The star had published his memoirs “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing” almost a year before his death. It’s about, among other things, his severe drug and alcohol addiction, surprising romances and, last but not least, his incredibly rapid rise to global stardom thanks to his role as Chandler Bing in the series “Friends”.
Perry was found dead in a hot tub at his home in Los Angeles on October 28 this year, according to US reports. The exact cause of death has not yet been clarified. The star was only 54 years old.
