Zoe Wees sings openly about her mental struggles. Now she has revealed what helps her acutely with panic attacks.
Zoe Wees (21) has repeatedly spoken openly about mental problems, and not just in her songs. who became known in 2017 on “The Voice Kids,” how she deals with panic attacks. If an anxiety attack is imminent, she grabs an ice cube, for example. She then lets it slide between her fingers.
“They calm me down, let me feel my pulse and, above all, their cooling effect distracts me from my actual thoughts: panic,” said the Hamburg resident. That helps, but: “Nevertheless, it still happens occasionally that I feel completely powerless.”
In addition to the emergency measure with the ice cube, Zoe Wees’ music helps her to deal with her psychological problems. “Expressing my fears, worries and thoughts in song lyrics has helped me take the next step,” she told “Bild”. It’s not for nothing that the title of her debut album, released in 2023, is “Therapy”.
Epilepsy and panic attacks: Zoe Wees processes them in songs
As a child, Zoe Wees, who grew up with her single mother, suffered from rolandic epilepsy. This is the most common form of epilepsy in children. It often subsides during puberty. Wees wrote her first single “Control” (2020) about her experiences with the disease.
Depression and panic attacks follow later. She heard “weird voices” in her head, as she once reported in the format. She was taken to the psychiatric hospital.
She has now learned to deal with her fears better. Even if the panic attacks cannot be “entered in the calendar like appointments”. But she felt physical signs beforehand.
In 2017, Zoe Wees attracted attention in “The Voice Kids,” even though she didn’t win the talent show. During the pandemic she became world famous via TikTok. She was the first German to appear at the American Music Awards and was a guest on various US talk shows.
