Jada Pinkett Smith: Oscar bell revived marriage to Will Smith

The Oscar blow has reshuffled the cards for the Smiths. Jada Pinkett Smith sees this as a reassessment of her relationship.

For Jada Pinkett Smith (52), her husband Will Smith’s (55) infamous Oscar slap against Chris Rock (58) had positive consequences. The actress said this now, almost two years after the incident. “I almost didn’t go to the Oscars that year, but I’m glad I did,” Pinkett Smith told the British newspaper. She calls the bell a “holy blow” because it brought so much good with it.

As a reminder, on March 27, 2022, Will Smith punched Chris Rock in the face on the Oscars stage. The comedian previously made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. The actress had shaved her head due to hair loss. “Don’t put my wife’s name in your damn mouth,” Smith yelled after the slap.

Shortly after the scandal, Will Smith received the Oscar for his leading role in “King Richard”. He was later expelled from the Academy, which awards the world’s most important film prize.

“Who knows where our relationship would be now”

“The moment the shit hits the fan, you see where you really stand,” said Jada Pinkett Smith about the scandal and its aftermath. “After all these years of trying to figure out if I was going to leave Will’s side, I needed this blow to realize that I will never leave him,” she continued. And: “Who knows where our relationship would be now if that hadn’t happened?”

Because what the public didn’t know at the time of the Oscar slap: Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith were de facto no longer a couple. They had already separated in 2016, according to Pinkett Smith’s recently published biography “Worthy.” But after Will Smith called her his “wife” during his Oscar tirade, it triggered something in her. Pinkett Smith revealed this in October 2023 on the British “The One Show”.

They haven’t really gotten together as a married couple, but they are now “living together in a way that works for us,” Pinkett Smith said in October.
