Why Arnold Schwarzenegger was arrested at Munich airport
Arnold, who has dual Austrian and American citizenship, was said to be heading to a climate charity auction taking place tomorrow in Kitzbühel, Austria.
The former governor of California, a passionate climate advocate, was supposedly carrying a valuable watch made by the Swiss luxury brand Audemars Piguet for auction.
Munich Central Customs Office spokesman Thomas Meister told BILD: “We have initiated criminal proceedings under tax law. The watch should have been registered because it is an import“.
“If the goods remain in the EU, they must be declared at customs. This applies to everyone, whether their name is Schwarzenegger or Müller, Meier, Huber,” a customs spokesperson told German media outlet SZ.
They went on to say that the movie star remains with customs officials while his luggage is searched.
“This takes a little time,” the spokesperson said, adding that he assumes the Austrian-born actor will be allowed to continue his journey.
The Austrian-born actor was also on his way to watch the Hahnenkamm race, a major competition on the alpine skiing calendar.
Run the charity Schwarzenegger Climate Initiativebased in Vienna, an eco-group that raises funds at a party during the prestigious race week.
