After months of speculation about whether or not the show would have a second season, Netflix confirmed in January 2022 that it would be moving forward with a season 2.
The long-awaited season 2 of “The squid game” will be released at the end of this year. Netflix announced the second season of the creator’s Korean survival drama series Hwang Dong-hyuk in a letter to shareholders on Tuesday, writing:
“Looking ahead, despite last year’s strikes delaying the release of some titles, we have a big, bold slate for 2024. Audiences will be able to choose from returning hit dramas like ‘The Diplomat’ T2, ‘Bridgerton’ S3, ‘The Squid Game’ S2 and ‘Emperatriz’ S2; unscripted series such as ‘Tour de France: Unchained’ S2, ‘Love is Blind’ S6, ‘F1: Drive to Survive’ S6 and ‘Full Swing’ S2; and brand new series like ‘3 Body Problem’ (based on the best-selling novel from the showrunners of ‘Game of Thrones’), ‘Griselda’ (starring Sofia Vegara, premiering this week), ‘The Gentlemen’ ( by Guy Ritchie), ‘Eric’ (starring Benedict Cumberbach), ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’, from Colombia based on the novel by Gabriel García Márquez and Senna from Brazil.”
Netflix executives also confirmed that the fourth season of “Emily in Paris” will be released later this year.
What The Squid Game is about
The nine-episode first season of Dong-hyuk’s “The Squid Game” premiered in 2021. The drama about a deadly competition between poor competitors to win 45.6 billion pounds turned out to be an all-time smash hit for Netflix and was nominated for 14 Emmy Awards. including best drama series (a first for a non-English language series), winning six.
“The Squid Game” also made history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards by becoming the first non-English-language series and the first Korean series to earn nominations for cast in a drama series, actor in a drama series (Lee Jung-jae), actress in a drama series (Jung Ho-yeon) and group of specialists. Lee Jung-jae and Ho-yeon won the awards. The series also won three Golden Globes, including best television drama.

Since then, the “Squid Game” universe has expanded to include a series of unscripted competitions, “The Squid Game: The Challenge”and an upcoming video game.
