Menstruation: Duchess Sophie: Don’t hide period products

Don’t hide pads and tampons in the closet: The times when menstruation was a taboo subject should be long gone, believes the British Duchess Sophie.

The British Duchess Sophie (59) has spoken out in favor of making menstrual products no longer such a secret. When she visited a London girls’ school, she advocated for a more open approach. “A lot of companies that make these products, whether it’s pads or tampons or something else, try to make the packaging relatively pretty,” said Sophie, who is married to a brother of King Charles III, Prince Edward. “But where do we keep them? Hidden in the closet.” The products would have to come out of the cupboard because that would also help people to have a better conversation.

“If your six-year-old little sister picks up one of these and asks, ‘What’s this for?’ then you can have a conversation about it at home,” Sophie told the PA news agency. When you hide period products, you make it taboo. For example, she also talked about heavy menstruation. Sophie, who has the official title of Duchess of Edinburgh, is involved with the Wellbeing of Women organization.
