Princess Charlène turns 46: her life in pictures

“Fortunately, I have a homeland to which I can escape” – Charlene Wittstock said this in July 2010, shortly after her engagement to Prince Albert of Monaco, in an interview with the French TV station “France 2” – which may have been meant as a joke, should continue to accompany the young woman in the coming years.

After the civil wedding on July 1, 2011 and the church wedding on July 2, 2011, Charlene Wittstock became Her Serene Highness Princess Charlène of Monaco. From that point on, the former professional swimmer was the country’s mother, fashion icon and wife of the head of the dwarf state.

But a lot of tears were shed during the religious ceremony. The emotion? It didn’t seem that way and was therefore a reason for wild speculation. There were also rumors that Charlène had tried to run away and avoid marriage shortly before the wedding. Years later the Princess would comment on this.

Princess Charlène of Monaco – she retires after the birth of the twins

Almost three and a half years after the wedding, the royal family was completed by the birth of twins, Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella. In the years that followed, the princess appeared less and less often. When she attended public appointments, she appeared increasingly unhappy. In 2021, Charlène said she was unable to leave South Africa for several months after a visit. She contracted an ear, nose and throat infection and underwent multiple operations. Back in Monaco, she didn’t stay with the family for long, but flew on to a rehabilitation clinic outside the country. Since she’s been back home, she’s been out in public more often.

Despite personal turmoil, one thing was always reliable: Charlène’s flawless performances. Even if the princess was not necessarily known for her exuberant temperament, she was approachable, attentive and friendly at her appointments. And the royal watchers have also gotten their money’s worth from Monaco’s princess so far, as Charlène has repeatedly resorted to eye-catching looks. She didn’t shy away from patterns, metallic fabrics or bright colors. Designs by the late Chanel and Fendi designer Karl Lagerfeld were part of the wardrobe, as were outfits by African fashion designers.

With the former star actress Grace Kelly, the ex-professional athlete has a deceased fashion icon as a mother-in-law. In the past, Charlène has repeatedly played with the memory of her.
