Julianne Moore will be the protagonist of “The Room Next Door”, Pedro Almodóvar’s first feature film spoken in English, confirmed after in 2022 the Spanish filmmaker was linked to another project in that language with the participation of Cate Blanchett. As reported by the specialized site Variety, Moore will join Tilda Swinton in the cast, who had already worked alongside Almodóvar in the short film “The Human Voice” (2021).
Although so far no details have been revealed about the plot or the roles that the actresses will assume, it is known that “The Room Next Door” will be a drama between a mother and her daughter, and that filming will take place during the first half of the year in both New York and Madrid.
In previous statements to the press, Almodóvar – who was awarded twice by the Hollywood Academy, in an international film for “All About My Mother” (1999) and for the script of “Hable con ella” (2002) – had already commented that both “The Human Voice” and the recent short “Strange Way of Life”, both in English, had been a kind of warm-up for this next film. In addition, “The Room Next Door” will mark the return of the director from La Mancha to the long format since “Madres paralleles” (2021), in which Penélope Cruz played a single mother who becomes too involved with a teenager in the same situation, a plot crossed by the question of the search for identity and justice for the missing victims of the Franco dictatorship.
