A bouquet of flowers for Anton Bruckner, and the most excellent serenade – the Scherzo from his “Ninth” sweeps through the middle hall thanks to the virtuoso “Hells Angels” aka Spring String Quartet. The hour that follows is a loving seduction to immerse yourself in the remarkable life of this “remarkable Mr. Bruckner” – also with a strong voice. Director Hans Jochen Menzel and “the exes” Dorothee Carls and Annika Pilstl pull out all the stops of puppet theater. They cackle as St. Florian chickens, dress up as queens of hearts, and sit on Bruckner’s neck as hand puppets of doubt. And in their game within the game, they carefully involve the celebrant in conversations in which the genius takes the audience on the rollercoaster ride of his life. The fact that Bruckner has recently started talking in a somewhat Bavarian way is as natural to him as he has acknowledged his Ansfeldner and St. Florian roots throughout his life.

The Spring String Quartet fuels the desire for more Bruckner

In Vienna, not everything is idle bliss: critic Eduard Hanslick’s thunderstorm breaks out with flashes of lightning on the humiliated man. Cupid doesn’t mean well to him either and lets his arrows miss the hearts of all the ladies. Neither shame nor pain nor the excessively long working days at the Vienna Conservatory can deter Bruckner: “Improvising is everything” for the rebel. The Spring String Quartet rocks “Never Be Good Again” in a free manner following in Bruckner’s footsteps, whose work – the “Fourth” – has even been tried and tested in “Star Wars”. John Williams, Brahms and Wagner – a lot of interesting facts are thrown in as if in passing, including details such as Bruckner’s compulsion to “count” in order to “bring order to chaos”. The fact that he was present at Beethoven’s exhumation in 1888 can only be described so humorously by puppetry.

Music arranger Philipp Plessmann has peeled core themes from Bruckner’s symphonies, which, fueled by the Spring String Quartet, ignite the pure desire to immerse themselves in his sound cosmos.

Conclusion: Loving theater magic meets sound magic, knowledge and wit. A bouquet of flowers for Anton Bruckner, and the most excellent serenade – the Scherzo from his “Ninth” sweeps through the middle hall thanks to the virtuoso “Hells Angels” aka Spring String Quartet.
