The 83-year-old was awarded a “Robert”, the Danish film award, on Saturday for her work on the Netflix film “Ehrengard: The Story of a Seduction”. The ex-monarch was not present at the awards ceremony in Copenhagen. The film’s producer, Marcella Dichmann, accepted the award on her behalf.

The film is an adaptation of a book by Danish author Karen Blixen, best known for her memoirs “Out of Africa”. The film was directed by Bille August, one of the Scandinavian country’s most renowned filmmakers.
Worked as an artist
In addition to her royal duties, Margrethe II had made a name for herself as a successful artist over the years. She is a painter and illustrator and has worked as a costume and set designer for the Royal Danish Ballet and Royal Danish Theater on numerous occasions.

In her New Year’s speech she surprisingly announced her abdication. On January 14th, after a 52-year reign, she handed over the throne to her eldest son, who is now King Frederik X. She retained her title as queen even after her abdication.
