Gareth Edwards to direct new Jurassic World movie

The film will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall, who helped launch the franchise in the ’90s.

After an agreement could not be reached for David Leitch directed, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment moved quickly and struck a deal for Rogue One director, Gareth Edwardsdirect a new movie Jurassic World.

The studio recently dated the film for July 2, 2025 and moved quickly to find a director, as Edwards spent all of last week meeting with executives. After impressing the producers Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshallwho helped launch the franchise in the ’90s, an offer soon came in and pre-production is expected to ramp up once the deal closes.

The new Jurassic World will tell a different story

The new film will be a completely new take on the Jurassic era and no cast members are expected to return. Jurassic World Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howardnor the actors of the original trilogy Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill. David Koepp wrote the script.

The film will be produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment, with Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley producing through Kennedy-Marshall. Executive Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project.

This isn’t Edwards’ first high-profile work, as he directed the smash hit godzilla for Legendary. That film helped launch its own universe that has produced four sequels and a recent television series Monarch that Legendary and Apple produce. He would also direct the standalone Star Wars film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Storywhich would gross $1 billion at the global box office.

He recently directed The Creator for 20th Century and New Regency. The film starred John David Washington and Gemma Chan.
