Queen Camilla: Vacation despite chaos at the British court

Queen Camilla has gone on vacation – even though there is a state of emergency at the British court: King Charles is being treated for cancer, Princess Kate is on sick leave until Easter and Prince William only seems to be available to a limited extent. Who will step in now?

For weeks now, only two high-ranking royals have been handling the program in the English royal family: Because King Charles and Duchess Kate are out for health reasons, Queen Camilla and Prince William have been given greater responsibility. Since it was revealed in early February that Charles had cancer and was being treated for it, the Queen has attended 13 of her husband’s appointments, in addition to her own. As British media report, the 76-year-old is now on vacation – despite the tense situation at court.

Camilla is said to have flown south this Monday and there are no appointments in her calendar until March 11th. According to The Times newspaper, Charles and parts of her own family will also be there for the break. But the short trip isn’t well received everywhere: “Who’s in charge now?” asked a royal family expert in the gossip magazine “The Sun.” And there was a debate on British breakfast television as to whether the number of extra appointments even justified a vacation. “Stop telling me they work so hard,” complained journalist Kevin Maguire on “Good Morning Britain.”

Queen Camilla is apparently on holiday with Charles, who is ill

Camilla’s vacation comes after a week in which the public increasingly criticized the royal family. Duchess Kate’s condition in particular caused wild speculation online: the 42-year-old was last seen at Christmas, and in January the palace reported that she had to undergo abdominal surgery and would be out until Easter. It is not known exactly what the mother of three is suffering from. The palace emphasized that she is recovering well. But William also fueled the rumor mill when he canceled his participation in a memorial service for his late godfather King Constantine of Greece at short notice – for “personal reasons”, as it was said. Instead, Prince Andrew, of all people, appeared, who has actually been relieved of all royal duties since 2019: King Charles’ brother was friends with the convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein.

Camilla is expected back at a Commonwealth service at Westminster Abbey on March 11. Until then, William must hold up the scepter for the Windsors – and will be supported by other members of the royal family. For example, his uncle Prince Edward is supposed to take on eight additional appointments.
