Football: EM song singer: Leony defends herself against criticism

Pop singer Leony will sing the official song for the European Football Championship together with other artists. This is met with criticism from some, even though the song hasn’t even been released yet.

The German musician Leony has defended herself against criticism of her as the singer of the official European Football Championship song. In a video on the Instagram platform, the 26-year-old responded to a user’s comment who questioned why she was singing the song and it wasn’t even in German. In addition to “a lot of great and sweet news,” the singer explained, she experienced “an incredible amount of hate.”

It was recently announced that Leony, whose real name is Leonie Burger, will sing the official song for the European Football Championship in the summer together with the US band OneRepublic and the Italian dance trio Meduza. The song has not yet been presented and the title is not yet known – but Leony, like the other artists involved, sings in English.

“Why should the official song of this entire European Championship be in German and everyone else simply wouldn’t understand it?” said Leony and added: “It wasn’t my decision as to which song is the goal anthem.”

Fans of the German national soccer team recently called for Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom” team to play in an online petition. The song has recently been heard a lot in the context of the national team because it is played in promotional videos for the new jerseys. Clips also appeared on social media in which past DFB goals were accompanied by the song. During the DFB’s friendly against the Netherlands, “Major Tom” was played after a goal. According to dpa information, the goal jingles at the European Championships are the same for all teams and are part of the official song.
