Scientists affirm that we are facing the sixth mass extinction

The scientific community warned about the disappearance of certain species due to the climate crisis. Also, it warns about the exploitation of natural resources.

According to scientists, the planet experienced five mass extinction events over time, as they were able to record through different investigations. In turn, they alert the beginning of the sixth stage.

Although the planet experienced other mass extinction events, This presents an important difference that alarms the scientific community. Unlike the others that were triggered by external conditionsa part of scientists lean towards the hypothesis that human action will have some responsibility on this occasion due to the climate crisis.

According to the Natural History Museum, it has already begun the sixth mass extinction because the planet has experienced drastic changes such as floods, forest fires and droughts. Figures shared by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimate that Agriculture is responsible for 90 percent of global deforestation and represents 70 percent of the planet’s freshwater use, which reveals the consequences of human action.

This concept refers to a short period in which there is a high percentage of disappearances of different fish, invertebrates, fungi, bacteria, plants, mammals, birds, among others.

In the history of planet Earth, events occurred over time that triggered the mass extinction of several species. According to Science magazine, the first period was the Ordovician-Silurian, which ended around 85% of many of the invertebrates of the time.

It was succeeded by the Late Devonian, Permian-Triassic, Triassic-Jurassic and Cretaceous-Paleogene. In the latter, also known as K-Pg, An asteroid collided with Earth and caused extinction of the dinosaurs. It is estimated that 76% of marine classes that existed in that period were “lost.” “Large marine reptiles never return,” paleontologist and geologist James Witts told the magazine.

This sixth extinction period should occur in thousands of years, but people “they accelerated this process at a dangerous pace.” However, humanity has time to limit these impacts if immediate changes are made in the way natural resources are used.
