In their much-discussed Netflix documentary, David and Victoria Beckham recently gave insight into their marriage – including difficult times. Looking back, the two don’t know how they were able to survive so much drama as a couple.
Anyone who previously dismissed Victoria and David Beckham as a rather one-sided celebrity couple may have been surprised after the Netflix documentary about the footballer and his life. The Beckhams presented themselves as personable, humorous and almost modest in parts. It’s not without reason that the documentary earned them a lot of sympathy.

But how did the couple actually feel after seeing each other and their lives on screen? “After we watched the movie we looked at each other and said, ‘I don’t know how we got through the last 27 years, but we did and we have an amazing family, an amazing business and we’re happy,'” David Beckham revealed on the “SmartLess” podcast. The episode will be released on May 20th and the “Daily Mail” is already quoting from it. “Of course when you’re with someone for so long you have your ups and downs, everyone knows that, and at the end of the day we were lucky because we had each other in those moments,” he said.

The depths that the former football star spoke of are also discussed in the documentary. His time at Real Madrid in particular put a strain on the Beckhams’ then young marriage after rumors of an affair about Beckham became loud. The time when their relationship was in the headlines for months felt like they were “drowning,” Victoria Beckham says in the Netflix documentary. Beckham said he felt “physically sick every day” as he and Victoria fought to save their marriage.
Silver wedding in July
In the podcast, the former player also says that he was initially nervous about seeing his family history documented on film. He therefore rejected previous offers. “To be honest, one of the reasons I wanted to do the documentary was for my family. I wanted them to have something in one place that they could watch and that they could look back and reminisce about. And that is what we really created,” Beckham said.
The next milestone is already coming up for the two of them: the Beckhams will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary in July.
