People: Cate Blanchett likes to use German words in everyday life

Blanchett can be seen in the film “Rumours” as the German Chancellor. The satire takes place during a G7 summit in Germany. In the conversation she reveals her fascination for the German language.

Hollywood star Cate Blanchett has a fascination for the German language – and a German word that she particularly likes to use. “In everyday life I like to use the word “wonderful”,” the 55-year-old told dpa in Cannes. “I just love the structure of the German language,” she explained. “The fact that you can have a word that is so specific for something. I remember when I was a teenager and someone who I thought was so sophisticated was talking about ‘Schadenfreude’. And I said: “Harm-what-the-joy?” I thought that was such a demanding word – as a 17-year-old it was my new favorite word.”

Blanchett can be seen as German Chancellor in the film “Rumours” at the Cannes Film Festival. The satire takes place during a G7 summit in Germany. The heads of state get lost in a forest and find themselves in increasing danger.
