Hollywood star Alec Baldwin has to face trial for the “Rust” shooting after all. A judge rejected his request.
US actor Alec Baldwin (66) has to answer in court in the case of the fatal shooting of camerawoman Halyna Hutchins (1979-2021) on the set of the western film “Rust”. A judge in Santa Fe in the US state of New Mexico has rejected his request to discontinue the proceedings. This is reported by .
Baldwin’s lawyers made serious allegations against the prosecution on May 17, accusing prosecutors of stifling questions from jurors during Baldwin’s arraignment in January and of making little or no effort to communicate with defense witnesses.
Judge contradicts Baldwin’s lawyers
In the past, it had been criticized that witnesses whose statements ultimately led to Baldwin’s indictment were heavily biased. The actor was also said not to have been responsible for examining the weapon that ultimately killed Hutchins.
The public prosecutor contradicted this account. And the judge in charge, Marlowe Sommer, could not confirm this accusation either. The trial can now start as planned in July. If convicted, Alec Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison.
In March, the film’s gunsmith, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was found guilty of neglecting her duty of supervision on set and was sentenced to 18 months in prison without parole.
Alec Baldwin pleads “not guilty”
The fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins occurred in October 2021 during the filming of Baldwin’s low-budget western “Rust” in Santa Fe. The camerawoman was fatally shot by a gun that Baldwin was holding. Baldwin pleads not guilty and denies pulling the trigger of the gun. However, an independent report concluded that the shot could only have been fired by pulling the trigger.
