Rory Kinnear will play Tom Bombadil in the upcoming second season of The Rings of Power, and Vanity Fair just released a new set of images offering the first look at the legendary character in live action.

Who is Tom Bombadil?
Bombadil is one of the fascinating beings of Middle-earth, and Lord Elrond refers to him as “a strange creature” during The Council of Elrond novels. The newly released footage seems to mostly come from the same scene in the new season, with Bombadil chatting with another strange guy introduced in The Rings of Power, the Stranger (Daniel Weyman). The pair are seen chatting in a cabin near the edge of Rhûn, the lands that make up the eastern part of Middle-earth.
Old Tom, as the novels called him, is a character who had lived in Middle-earth – or Arda as it was known – long before the arrival of the Valar, the Elves of Valinor and the rise of the Dark Lords, Morgoth. and Sauron. Described in Tolkien’s books as “older than old”, Bombadil appears to be an encyclopedia of all the knowledge of Middle-earth, given that it existed before living things were created. So it would make sense for a wizard who has lost his memory of him, in the Stranger, to seek advice from him.
Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Prime Video on August 29.
