Anger during filming of “Big Little Lies”: Nicole Kidman threw a stone through a door

Nicole Kidman experienced an emotional emergency on the set of the series “Big Little Lies”. Out of anger, she destroyed a door.

The HBO series “Big Little Lies”, released in 2017, tells the story of a group of women who have to cope with traumatic experiences from the past and present. Superstar Nicole Kidman (56) plays the main character Celeste Wright in “Big Little Lies”. In a talk hosted by the show with other top-class stars, the actress now spoke about the enormous emotional strain of filming the series.

Nicole Kidman: “It’s very hard on the psyche”

After a nerve-racking day of filming, Kidman even threw a stone through a door because it was “locked and I couldn’t get in. I had never done that in my life.” Looking back, the 56-year-old explains her unusual behavior as follows: “Obviously I had a lot of pent-up emotions. I ruined the whole thing. It cost a fortune.”

She was “kind of mad,” Kidman said the next day in explanation to her co-star Alexander Skarsgård (47), who played her toxic husband Perry Wright in the series, and her director Jean-Marc Vallée (1963-2021), who died in 2021 at the age of only 58.

“Big Little Lies” filming took an emotional toll

These pent-up emotions are also related to the general working practices of series productions. “There’s a way we work where the show just has to go on, and so you just keep going – you show up to work and work and work and work.” Often, the end result is “six months of 12-, 14-hour days, and you don’t have time to say, ‘I have to take care of myself,'” says Kidman.

Sofía Vergara and Jennifer Aniston agree with Nicole Kidman

Another of her past series productions, the Prime Video show “Expats”, which was released in 2024, also took a similar emotional toll on Kidman. After filming this show, the actress “made a comedy because I went crazy with my own psychology”. Filming the series by Lulu Wang (41) was also “very hard on the psyche”.

For her candid statements, Kidman received a lot of approval from her co-stars Sofía Vergara (51) and Jennifer Aniston (55), who were also present at the conversation. “The body doesn’t know that what you’re going through isn’t real,” said former “Modern Family” star Vergara, while “Friends” icon Aniston admitted that she “broke down a little bit in tears” when Kidman spoke.

The series “Big Little Lies” was broadcast in 2017 and 2019 and has had two seasons so far. In addition to Kidman, Reese Witherspoon (48), Shailene Woodley (32), Laura Dern (57) and Zoë Kravitz (35) also appeared in the series. Kidman herself announced a sequel in the form of a third season at the end of last year. However, this has not yet been officially confirmed.
