Eli is a 14-year-old African-American boy living in Detroit with his adoptive father, Hal, who perceives that Eli is falling into crime. While he explores an abandoned building looking for materials to make extra money, Eli stumbles upon the remains of an otherworldly impact. Among the rubble, she finds a strange metallic box that she takes home. She doesn’t know what it is, but when she picks it up he seems to activate it, and Eli decides to put it away carefully.
Pursued by a vengeful criminal, the feds, and a gang of otherworldly soldiers, a recently freed ex-con and his adopted teenage brother are forced to go on the run with a weapon of mysterious origin as their only protection.
