Cinemas: May had 56% fewer spectators

Everything indicates that 2024 will be one of the worst years in terms of spectators, leaving aside 2020 and 2021.

May closed in cinemas with 2,160,000 spectators, according to reports from the consulting firm Ultracine. This shows that they were a 55.6% less than last year in the same month. If the comparison is against 2019, 42.8% were lost and 38.3% against 2015.

Nothing indicates that this trend will change in June and 2024 will be one of the worst years in terms of spectators, leaving aside 2020 due to the pandemic and the slow opening of 2021.

This is due to two factors, on the one hand the eternal Argentine economic crises, but on the other the lack of international blockbuster moviesbasically from the United States, due to the strike of Hollywood screenwriters and actors.

If we add to that the lack of national films of interest to the public, which has been going on for a long time, this is what happens. Let us remember that in 2023 two of the three most viewed nationals were documentaries about the national team and the other was one of Guillermo Francella.

It seems difficult to recover anything from all this during the winter holidays.

The 5 most viewed films of May were:

  • Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom 781,000
  • Garfield: Away from Home 512,000
  • Imaginary friends 98,000
  • Death Tarot 95,000
  • Furiosa: From the Mad Max 90,000 saga
