Cinema: Tribeca Festival in New York starts

Dozens of film screenings and other events, thousands of spectators, many stars: the Tribeca Festival is underway again in New York. One star is being celebrated in particular – and there are German entries.

The 23rd edition of the Tribeca Festival is starting in New York, with documentaries about fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and DJ Avicii, who died in 2018, as well as several German contributions and a mini-festival for co-founder Robert De Niro on the program. From Wednesday to June 16, films, discussions, music concerts and video game screenings will be shown throughout the city, the organizers announced. Numerous celebrities and more than 100,000 visitors are expected.

The festival was founded by actor De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. To mark his 80th birthday last year, De Niro is getting his own mini-festival at the Tribeca Festival from June 14 to 16: The “De Niro Con” will also feature panel discussions, film screenings and exhibitions.

The documentary “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge” was selected as the opening film, and documentaries about the life of the Swedish DJ Avicii (“Avicii – I’m Tim”), who died in 2018, and the musician Linda Perry (“Linda Perry: Let It Die Here.”) will also be shown. German participation includes the film “Schatz” by Julia von Heinz with Lena Dunham in the leading role, as well as the ARD series “Schwarze Früchte”, the film “Era Oculta” and the animated cartoon “Scrubby”.
