Since his childhood, society has tried to force him into a corset of prejudices and expectations, says Kaulitz. He makes fun of this in a campaign.
In the month of Pride in June, the dating app Tinder has been promoting queer friendliness for a few days. Tokio Hotel star Bill Kaulitz (34) posted a reel for this purpose, taking up the viral “Of course…” trend from Tiktok and ironically taking aim at clichés. “I like men, of course I drink champagne for breakfast,” Kaulitz says at the fridge. Or: “I like men, of course I wear penis slippers in my house.” And: “… of course I never leave the house without makeup.”
As part of the campaign, Tinder is also producing a web series about the reality of life in the LGBTQIA+ community. The episode with Bill Kaulitz is scheduled for June 19, 2024. The English abbreviation LGBTQIA+ stands for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans people, queer people, intersex people and asexuals – the plus sign is intended as a placeholder for other identities.
Bill Kaulitz, who grew up near Magdeburg, said in a statement: “For years I was told to keep my sexuality a secret. I simply realized that having secrets is much more stressful for me than simply being open. The past few years have shown how freeing it is for me to be authentic, to no longer draw boundaries between Bill and Bill on stage.”
Since his childhood, society has tried to force him into a tight corset of prejudices, norms and expectations, said Kaulitz – “simply out of helplessness and being overwhelmed by my appearance, the way I speak, sing, dress and perform”. But at some point you have to get out of the boxes.
