“Reindeer Baby”: Alleged stalker sues Netflix for millions

The popular Netflix series “Baby Reindeer” is based on a true story and is a worldwide success. The alleged real-life stalker feels defamed and now wants compensation.

Richard Gadd wrote the screenplay for the Netflix series “Baby Reindeer”. The Scotsman created a story that is autobiographical and is about him and a stalker named “Martha”. The series is about himself: An unsuccessful comedian who works behind the bar is visited one day by a woman in the bar and can’t get rid of her for the entire series. He has a stalker.

The stalker Martha, who keeps telling confusing lies, such as that she is actually a lawyer, also exists in real life – after all, “Baby Reindeer” is supposed to be a true story. Her name is said to be Fiona Harvey and she was quickly tracked down after the media interest in the series and was not afraid to step into the spotlight herself. She even sat down on Piers Morgan’s talk show “Uncensored” and spoke publicly about the hype surrounding her.

Fiona Harvey claims “Reindeer Baby” is a lie

Now, however, the Briton has decided to profit from the story and is suing the streaming provider Netflix for $170 million. On Thursday, Harvey filed suit in the US state of California. Fiona Harvey claims that she has suffered defamation and emotional stress as a result of the series. She insists that she is the real “Martha” from the series. However, Harvey denies that the Netflix series is really based on a true story, because it recalls different events than those depicted.

The series’ creator, British comedian Richard Gadd, told this “lie” “out of greed and a thirst for fame,” the lawsuit says. The story is being distorted. The “lies” being spread include that Harvey was twice convicted of stalking, that she was sentenced to five years in prison, and that she sexually assaulted Gadd. These “lies” were told because they “make a better story than the truth – and better stories make money.”

The plaintiff claims that the motive of the “lie” was “to attract more viewers, get more attention, make more money and maliciously destroy the life of plaintiff Fiona Harvey.”

Gadd has said he changed details of the stalker for the series to protect her identity. A Netflix spokesperson said the company would “vigorously” fight the lawsuit and defend Gadd’s right to “tell his story.”
