Dick Van Dyke received another trophy at the age of 98. The actor himself could hardly believe his win of the Daytime Emmy.
Dick Van Dyke (98) became the oldest winner of a Daytime Emmy on Friday (June 7). The actor and entertainer received the trophy for his guest appearance as Timothy Robicheaux in “Days of Our Lives”. “I’m the oldest nominee in history – I can’t believe it,” said the 98-year-old “Mary Poppins” star in his acceptance speech. “If I’d known I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”
“The crowning achievement of an 80-year career”
Van Dyke, who is also known for the sitcom “The Dick Van Dyke Show” (1961-1966), the series “Diagnosis: Murder” (1993-2001) and the film “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (1968), appeared in four episodes of the soap opera “Days of Our Lives” last year. He reportedly came on stage with his wife Arlene Silver to collect his award. The actor and the makeup artist have been married since 2012.
“I can’t believe it. I feel like a spy from late-night television,” he said. The TV star also thanked the organizers of the television award, the “National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS)”, for being so warm to him: “You are a real family and you just welcomed me and treated me so nicely.” He added: “Thank you very much! This is really the crowning achievement of an 80-year career.”
Only Dick Van Dyke is missing the Oscar
In addition to his latest trophy, Dick Van Dyke already has four Primetime Emmys and many other awards under his belt that he has won over the years. He could also join the ranks of the EGOT award winners, i.e. those stars who have received at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Van Dyke, who has also received the Kennedy Award, is still missing the Oscar.
