Scene from The Alienist, Netflix original series
What is The Alienist, Netflix series about?
The Alienist is set in New York at the end of the 19th century and focuses on the search for a serial killer. For the investigation they use methods that are novel, such as fingerprint analysis and psychology. What stands out at first is the brutality of the murders. The first victim is a 13-year-old immigrant who has had his eyes removed, his genitals mutilated and other unpleasant injuries caused.
The immigration phenomenon is very present in the series, and is one of the main problems because it is the focus of the murderer’s attack, and investigators believe that he is among different interest groups that seek to maintain the status quo of the city of New York. Emblematic figures from American history such as Theodore Roosevelt and JP Morgan also appear.
