Paul McCartney returns to Argentina: what were his previous visits like?

October 5 will mark McCartney’s return to Buenos Aires, after 5 years of waiting; while his return to Córdoba on October 23 will take place 8 years after the musician’s last performance.

Paul played his first solo show in Argentina in 1993 and has played eight shows since then.

What were Paul McCartney’s previous visits to Argentina like?

After a decade without touring, his 89-90 world tour only had two Latin stops: in April 1990, he broke the audience record for a stadium show with two Maracanas.

Hyperinflation made it impossible for it to go down here. But In 1993, through Convertibility, Paul McCartney finally came to Argentina.

It was announced for December 9 and 11 at River but, with the addition of a third performance, the shows took place in a row from the 10th to the 12th.

On December 9, McCartney finally set foot on Argentine soil in a private Jet Lear, from San Pablo. He arrived with his wife Linda and his children Stella, Mary and James.

The 1993 shows are still remembered as a milestone, from the beginning with Drive My Car until the end with Hey Jude.

In addition to being declared an illustrious citizen of Buenos Aires, Paul gave a local press conference for the only time. There he announced that he was going to meet with George and Ringo to make some new music for an official documentary, which in 1995 would be the Anthology.

Paul’s second visit took place in 2010did two shows in River, as part of the Up and Coming Tour (from May to May), in the middle of shows in Porto Alegre and São Paulo.

Each night started with a different theme, although the two sets of encores were immutable, closing with the review of Sgt. Pepper and The End.

In 2016 McCartney returned to the country with two concerts at the Único stadium in La Plata (May 16 and 17) and with a historic day for the people of Córdoba (May 15) at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium. This time the tour was called One On One.

On a set list comprised of 39 songs, the shows began and ended the same way: with A Hard Day’s Night opening and The End as closure.

Paul’s last visit to Argentina was 5 years ago. The tour Freshen Up started in Canada in September 2018, behind the recently released Egypt Stationand arrived here on March 23, 2019, back in Buenos Aires, this time at the Polo Field.

As in 2016, the show closed with the final section of the medley of Abbey Road.
